Thursday 27th September – canoe ***** sunny
Yes! The sky is blue and the sun is back at Lac Salagou :) We did
exercises and while Mag made the breakfast I pumped the canoe up. We were
off by about 10.30 and didn’t get back until 5 :) We paddled round the
edges of the reeds near us first and saw the most fish of the whole day.
First an ornamental koi carp about a foot long, a pike about the same and I
saw a carp about 2 foot long! We only saw tiddlers after that. We
explored the whole of this end of the lake. We didn’t go over to the dam
or the bit where the campers park as we have seen quite a lot of that side.
There are so’oooo many fishermen with boats and all the kit around the
edge we had to keep going out and round to avoid all their floats and
markers – I can’t see any skill in sitting for days with four rods out,
using a boat to bait your swim and then drop your hook over it – to
casting involved – sad really :( We stopped at a beach near the deserted
village of Celles and although it was a nice spot there were several
passers by – mainly nudists trying to find a good spot without having to
walk too far from their car! We pulled the canoe up the beach a little and
just as we sat down on the blanket I looked at the back of the canoe and
there was a big crayfish coming out of the lake to investigate the fin! He
was there for ages. When he started to crawl away we went to have a good
look at him. He was brilliantly coloured with petrol blue claws with red
edges. He soon put his claws up when he saw us and then reversed away into
the lake :) Had our lunch and read for a bit then paddled off towards the
village and out to some old dead trees that stick up in the middle of the
lake and are a favourite haunt for cormorants. Somebody had put a pottery
sculpture of an old man on one of the trees too. We went round the island
and back up the other side before finally turning into our bay and back to
the van. What a great day :) A much needed cuppa and read then played
phase 10 until the very colourful sunset!!! Had filled pasta for tea and
ran the engine for a bit to give the batteries a boost.

Friday 28th September - relaxing – then a little travelling and walk
sunny
We made the most of our last morning at Salagou, the sun was out and the
sky blue so exercises then Mag went for a swim in the lake! I didn’t
venture in because the water is a bit chilly and Mag said she had gone a
bit numb when she got out! We sat outside to have breakfast then I washed
the van. We watched lake life and turned some rocks over and watched the
baby crayfish scuttle away to a new home. There were a few walkers and
fishermen passing but we were still more secluded than round the corner
with the white elephant vans! We had our lunch then left our lovely place,
filled up with water at the aire and headed for Bezier and Narbonne (only
14 prostitutes – 2 with customers!!!! along the route today!). Stopped
at a Casino and stocked up the empty fridge and treated ourselves to 3
cheap magnums. Got to our favourite spot at Bages/Peyreic Etang and there
was a fisherman parked there! We had a cuppa just up the track and then
when he went home moved into prime position. Went for a long walk around
the etang/vineyard track. It was a lovely evening and the etang looked
like glass:) Got back just as it was getting dark and the bats were going
crazy round our heads. Lovely view of the lights at Bages on the water.
Played phase 10, and shared the last fake magnum:)
